Description

Sodium Valproate BP / IP The sodium salt form of valproic acid exerting anti-epileptic activity is known as SODIUM VALPROATE. The drug is converted into its active form in the blood, the valproate ion. Valproate sodium has shown to increase the concentrations of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain, by inhibiting the enzymes responsible for the catabolism of GABA. Valproate sodium may also create a direct membrane-stabilizing effect by affecting potassium channels. Evidence has shown that it is more effective than other anti-epileptic drugs in treating:* • Idiopathic generalised epilepsy syndromes • Difficult to classify seizures
